Complete vs. Incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries

Victims of spinal cord injuries often require life-long care and assistance with daily tasks. The doctor may talk about a lesion on the spinal cord. A lesion is the medical term for an area that is damaged. There are two types of spinal cord damage:

• Complete spinal cord injury: An accident victim with a complete spinal cord injury will be completely paralyzed in the area of the body below the injury. This type of injury will result in complete and permanent loss of sensation and mobility in the affected area, resulting in paraplegia or quadriplegia.

• Incomplete spinal cord injury: The victim loses sensation and/or movement in parts of the body below the injury, but the paralysis is not complete. He may be able to move his body, but not feel sensations. Or, he may feel sensations, but lack control of his limbs. The effects may be present on one or both sides.

If the spinal cord injury is in the back, the victim will have some degree of movement and sensation in the upper body (paraplegia). If the spinal cord injury is the neck, the victim will lose movement and sensation in the entire body (quadriplegia).

Types of Incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries

• Central cord syndrome – This occurs when the fibers that carry information from the brain to the body are damaged, meaning that some signals from the brain aren’t received. This will result in loss of control in the hands and arms.

• Brown-Séquard syndrome – Brown-Séquard Syndrome occurs when damage to the spinal cord causes weakness or paralysis on one side of the body and a loss of sensation on the other side. This is an incomplete spinal injury.

• Anterior spinal cord syndrome – This occurs when the artery that runs along the front of the spinal cord is compressed by bone fragments or a herniated disc, resulting in a complete loss of strength and sensation below the injury.

• Posterior cord syndrome – The posterior cord carries sensory information from the body to the brain. The victim is able to move and feel sensations of heat and cold; however, he may also feel shooting pains, burning, prickling, shocks, etc.
